Stan, the valet parking of the future

"Go ahead without me, I am looking for a place and I will join !" In the endless maze of parking lots, finding where to park can be a real obstacle course. But a small cube of metal at the beguiling smile and twinkling eyes may soon turn to the parking areas.

Stanley Robotics, a start-up founded by Clément Boussard, Aurélien Cord, and Stéphane Evanno, develops from 2015, a robot valet outside, simply called "Stan". A first in the world. The robot, tested at Roissy in 2017, will go soon to the aisles of the P5 car park of the airport of Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, reserved for long-term parking. Four controllers are expected to circulate at the end of the year, and, eventually, a twenty Stan could manage almost 7 000 seats.

Specifically, the user shall place his vehicle at the entrance to the parking lot in a box secure, and then indicates the data of the flight at a kiosk. The driver retrieves his keys and Stan takes care of the rest : it uses its long arms under your car, the lifts and the train station. On your return, there is no need to roam the aisles to find your means of locomotion. It will be back in his box. You have a 4x4 ? Stan also love the large calibers and can lift nearly 3 tons.

The robot, which the company refused to provide us with the price, saves time for the user and space for the operator. Thanks to a sophisticated program, Stanley Robotics ensures that we can optimize 50% of the area of a parking lot. A solution that would avoid the need for airports to expand their parking areas.

Only problem : the French law prohibits, for the moment, interactions between autonomous vehicles and human, and the parking must be fully closed and secure. To live happy, Stan will have to live hidden.

The EXPRESS. Where does this passion for robots ?

Clément Boussard. I loved Lego and Meccano ! Build, to give life to something, it has always been my thing. I have a side that is a little Frankenstein ! [Laughter.] I then pursued studies in math, and then I naturally turned to robotics.

Stan, this is a bit of the first Transformers, right?

C. B. And yet, I do not like this movie ! My reference SF, this is more 2001, a space Odyssey, by Stanley Kubrick.

You are past the research lab to the start-up. Why have you taken the plunge ?

C. B. To concretize the ideas developed. In a laboratory, it is the journey that counts. In a start-up, we are first trying the result. And we can't do it all alone... I quickly realized that I had a role of manager, and that there had to be more directive.

And the women, where are they in Stanley Robotics [They are only six out of the thirty employees] ?

C. B. We would love to have more ! But it is true that it is a medium rather masculine.

The dangers of artificial intelligence, it speaks to you?

C. B. Unlike Uber, it has never killed anyone! It is just necessary to improve the interactions between the human and the machine. Personally, I very much believe in the man increased, exoskeletons... And then to have two arms in the back, it would be rather nice not?

You have the air of believing in the machine more than the man...

C. B. : Not at all ! I believe the feelings, the emotions... The machine will never be able to perform a selfless action. Blow on a dandelion, it would be completely useless ; and yet, it is beautiful,...
