The intriguing return of the headmaster

there was ambiguity since he had been laid off. Paul Gobillot, director of the collège Saint-Joseph in Saint-Ambroix in the Gard, confirmed to The Express : he had just received this Thursday, June 21, his letter of dismissal. In this small municipality of nearly 3 200 souls nestled in the hollow of the Cevennes, the fate of the head of the school of 62 years, suddenly suspended after more than thirty years of exercise in this group of catholic school under contract, is at the centre of all conversations.

for more than a week, its defenders never cease to praise his "dedication", "commitment", "professionalism", and this reveals to loud noise in their misunderstanding after his suspension. In vain so. "We are dealing with a real hunting to the man," said his lawyer, Philip de Lumley Woodyear. After accusing Paul Gobillot in the management of a case of rape between students, the management of the diocese seems to pursue him," says-t it.

as to Why the sanction reserved for this teacher elicits-t-it so many passions ? How is it perceived by others ? What are the objections alleged against him ?

A case of rape between students

The beginning of the"case Gobillot" dates back to the month of march. After having been informed of the alleged rape of a college student by two other students of the institution during a school trip to Malta - which he had not participated, the director went to the police with the victim's parents and supports them in their efforts. A judicial investigation has since been opened, and the two alleged perpetrators of the assault are under investigation for "gang rape".

the result of this drama, Paul Gobillot is first suspended from his functions by the management of the diocese of the Gard and the management body of the institution (BMT), followed by the rector. "This suspension has done me the effect of a blow on the head," says the sexagenarian. "Originally, I was accused of not having complied with the administrative procedures by contacting the force without having informed my hierarchy," says the director, whose defence is relayed in many media.

result Is this incredible movement of solidarity. A guard of honour of several dozens of people around him when he goes to the interview prior to her dismissal on June 11, which it appears to the applause. A petition launched on the website Change.org, accounts for more than 2 500 signatures to date and the testimonies of parents or of students or former students, but also unknown, are pouring in. "There are too many cases choked to death", "His superiors would have preferred not to make waves which would have been fatal for the victim", "May-be would have preferred to set internally this unfortunate story as to not sully the reputation of this catholic college," one can read there, among other messages of support or anger.

"serious problems"

On 12 June, the day after the hearing of the head of the school, the diocesan director of catholic education Jerome Martine tries to cope with the media storm and the wave of emotion raised by the case, saying in a statement that, "contrary to interpretations that are misleading against which we raise with the greatest force, this is in no way the fact to have reported a rape that would be criticized Mr. Gobillot". "The responsibility of the head of the school," adds Jérôme Martine, has been engaged for a number of reasons in this folder that, in addition to of serious problems, led to his layoff".

What does he mean by "serious problems" ? Silence. Contacted by The Express, the institution announces a new release that does not come*. A silence that, since then, feeding all sorts of assumptions. "We will not suspend a head of school like that. If they have information, why not give it to them ? This waiting is unbearable", said-t-on the side of his support committee. While, on the side of the catholic institution, it calls for "respect for the time of the proceedings."

a Few days after the layoff of the director, another event came to sow a little more on the disorder : the announcement of the removal of a pilot class of the hotel Saint-Joseph for ten students "dropouts". The next school year, it will be transferred to the Grand-Combe, is situated 22 kilometres away.

"Our ambition was to give a chance to all young dropouts in school, whether children of families of migrants, students suffering from school phobia, or other who have accumulated delays," explains Paul Gobillot. In recent years, we have achieved incredible results ! My greatest pride is to see these young people in the street with a CDD or a CDI in your pocket," says the director, who knew this famous class on the harness, but fought for several months for maintenance.

Some local elected officials are, in turn, share their emotion. "I don't understand the relationship between the tragedy that has affected the students of Saint-Joseph and the disappearance of this class ! For me, this sudden decision and not motivated adds a little more to the confusion," says Jean-Pierre de Faria, mayor of Saint-Ambroix. "In our sector, in the throes of great social and economic difficulties, which is struggling to recover from the disappearance of the mining industry, we need innovative structures like this one. All that, supported by the policy of the city, it cost nothing to managers of the school," says the first magistrate who is said to have expressed his concern to the rector, to the diocese, the warden...

A "free electron" that "dislike" ?

"I've always done a figure of the free electron, can be that it is displeasing to some," sighed Paul Gobillot, supported by a large majority of the teachers of the institution. "I was proud to work in this college where all the children, they are sons of gypsies, the doctor or the pharmacist of the area, were welcome, as evidenced by Ghislaine Pialet, a professor of French who works in Saint-Ambroix for the last twenty-eight years. Paul Gobillot work since the beginning for all communities, all backgrounds come together in kindness and respect for one another. Maybe it did not gel with the image that some would like to give to the institution."

According to her, the headmaster would be "in the sights" of the managers catholics since long months : "two years ago, a new manager arrived to oversee all the entities of the group in school that goes from kindergarten to the college, and the powers of Paul Gobillot have been gradually eroded. A proctor that he really liked was fired. And now it is outright class of dropouts that drop out." According to her, the real estate projects in progress could also be the origin of the contractions. It would indeed intended to bring together on a single site, located in the city centre, the three entities of the group school-until then spread out over the common. "I actually suggested that it didn't sound a good idea to meet with all the students in such a small area," says the director. On this last topic, it's impossible to know what is fantasy or reality, since the direction of the diocese remains silent.

"If mr. Gobillot is not..."

Teachers on sick leave, students are confused, parents of students in the boil... Was St. Joseph, the climate is particularly tense. "Honestly I fear for our school. There is a risk of the face of departures in cascade. All of this makes me the effect of a real mess," says Ghislaine Pialet. Some parents of students, saying "écoeurés", have confirmed that they have already taken steps to enrol their children elsewhere next year. "Frankly, if mr. Gobillot is not, my son will be the 5th in another college," said Jean-Paul Thomas, 54, himself a former pupil of the director. "I had him as a prof of biology. I have to admit that I was not a student, very motivated but, by dint of encouragement and support, he has managed to make me love school," he explains.

Jean-Pierre Di Massimo, grandson of the former director who, there are twenty-eight years, had chosen Paul Gobillot, as the successor, also testifies in a letter : "I have seen mr. Gobillot arrive at the college in the morning at 7 am to leave at 21h, I saw him climb on the roof to put a product étanchéifiant, or during the summer going into college more wealthy, which gave the offices to replace the old desks. These are only examples among many others..."

Galvanized by all these testimonies of support, Paul Gobillot intends to continue to struggle on the field of the judiciary and "restore his honor" him, which is only two-three years of retirement. While seeking to continue its work with school leavers, through associative this time.

* The press release was finally published on Friday, 22 June without making really any further explanation to the dismissal of Paul Gobillot.
