Journals of sociology, trapped by false studies

Sham academic. Three persons have completed a successful hoax in the United States by publish in several journals of sociology research articles entirely invented, the conclusions ridiculous. They sought to demonstrate the lack of rigor of these reviews.

In total, seven articles on the 20-written by the trio have been accepted by journals, passing the obstacle, dreaded reading committees are supposed to check the academic rigor of the articles. A trap revealed Wednesday.

to Make the absurd ideas "in the mode"

The fake articles published deal with all subjects of society explosives : gender, racism or sexuality, what the authors of the hoax call "studies of grievances".

"When one makes the absurd ideas and horrific enough to fashion politically, we will be validating at the highest level," says James Lindsay. It has obtained a doctorate in mathematics in 2010 at the University of Tennessee and devoted himself fully to this project since a year and a half.

The other two trappers are Peter Boghossian, professor of philosophy at the university of Portland, and Helen Pluckrose, editor-in-chief of the site AreoMagazine.com site, which has published a detailed account of the hoax. The studies were sent under a pseudonym.

Rapes dog and Mein Kampf

one of The studies, published in may in the journal Gender, Place & Culture, and finally removed, claimed the study of culture canine rape in dog parks, drawing parallels with the men. Another analysis was intended to explain why a man masturbating while thinking of a woman without her consent, committed a sexual assault. Another paper was a rewrite of a feminist of a chapter of Mein Kampf.

Some items were testing, but some said they rely on data, such as interviews, which is in theory verifiable. It was the case of a study on the impact of the use of a dildo for anal sex by heterosexual men on their transphobia. "If our project demonstrates anything, it is that we can't trust the current research in these disciplines," says James Lindsay. But the goal of the project, according to him, is to "reform" these disciplines, and not to destroy them.

The publisher of the acting of the journal of philosophy feminist Hypatia, Ann Garry, log bomb, said it was "deeply disappointed". "The idea that individuals submit work academic fraud violates many standards of academic and ethical," she wrote.

Roberto Refinetti, chief of the journal Sexuality & Culture, explained that the article on the dildos had been reviewed by three academics, "and none of them suspected a hoax". According to him, the case highlights the lack of integrity of the authors, and not of the journal. Nicholas Mazza, editor of the Journal of Poetry Therapy, also trapped, was far more focused on the plagiarism, but now, "I'd check the authenticity of the authors/institutions", he writes.

"objections to political and non-academic"

If the hoax has been ridiculed on Twitter, researchers were concerned about the method and the ethics of fake authors, as well as conclusions généralisatrices that some might be drawn for the disciplines involved. "They have shown that when one proposes a study full of false data, it may be published. But as we know since decades," said Ivan Oransky, the site's Shrink Watch.

quality issues or fraud are not limited neither to the humanities nor to the reviews little listed. Even the greatest of scientific journals should regularly remove items proposed by researchers sometimes celebrated.

In addition, wrote the professor of gender studies at the university of Sussex, Alison Phipps in the Times of Higher Education, it is clear that the authors of the hoax have targeted disciplines "with which they have objections political, and non-academic".
